Midland Area Agency on Aging provides
services under the Older Americans Act of 1965 and the Nebraska
Community Aging Act of 1982. The purpose of the programs is to assist
older persons to maintain good health and live independently in their
own home as long as they choose. Services are provided on a fee or
suggested donation basis to people 60 years of age or older. Where
needed, help in finding financial assistance is provided. Information
about In-Home Services, Center Services, Transportation, and Supportive Services is listed below.
Locations of where these
services are offered are also listed below. For information about our
CHOICES program, previously referred to as Care Advocacy, please visit
our CHOICES page.
In-Home
Services
In-home services consist of home delivered meals, homemaker and chore
services, housekeeping, shopping assistance, respite/attendant care,
letter writing, and a friendly visitor program. Usually, services can
be arranged regardless of income. MAAA is a service partner with the
Department of Health and Human Services and can assist persons with
direction in service payment eligibility.
Home Delivered Meal
Persons who are physically unable to prepare regular meals due to
illness, injury, or a disability may receive home delivered meals. Hot,
frozen, and shelf-stable meals are available.
Homemaker Service
Homemaker services are offered to individuals requiring assistance with
preparing meals, doing light housework, managing money, using the
telephone, or other household activities.
Chore Service
Chore service is provided to those needing assistance with heavy
housework, yard work, or sidewalk maintenance.
Respite/Attendant Care
Respite/Attendant Care Service is provided as support for older persons
in their home or the home of the primary caregiver. This helps provide
brief periods of relief for family members or other caregivers.
Center
Services
A wide variety of planned events are offered. Activities include
crafts, ceramics, holiday parties, bingo and card parties, carry-in
dinners, picnics, and one-day to two-week vacation tours. Some centers
have pool tables, while most provide space for quilting and offer a
variety of educational and health promotion programs.
Center services are available at 18 locations--11 are open five days a
week, six to eight hours per day, and seven are open one day a month.
Other
than those listed above, some center service activities include center
meals, information and assistance, support groups, legal services,
telephone reassurance, special interest programs, and many other social
and recreation activities.
Center
Meals
Hot, noon meals are served five days a week at 12 of our centers on a
reservation basis. Four of our centers serve two to three times a week,
and four serve once a month. Persons wishing to attend should call or
stop by the center a day in advance to make a reservation for the
following day.
Information
& Assistance
Supportive services staff are highly trained in services and
governmental programs affecting senior citizens and how they work. This
information is catalogued for ready reference to answer a personal or
telephone inquiry. If requested, staff will assist you in making
contact with the service you need. Staff will also make a private home
visit to discuss options available.
Legal
Services
Midland Area on Aging provides an attorney who visits designated
centers in each county on a scheduled basis. The attorney gives
presentations and will advise or assist seniors with a variety of legal
questions. Legal assistance is designed to serve the needs of those
participants on a limited income.
Telephone
Reassurance
Telephone reassurance calls are made daily, or on a scheduled basis, to
check on the well being of homebound elderly persons. Senior volunteers
typically make the reassurance calls as part of the senior center
activity program. Staff and volunteers make personal, one-on-one calls.
Clients are assessed on a yearly basis.
Transportation
Offices operating transportation services will
provide rides to the center as
well as to doctor appointments, shopping trips, etc. Operating days,
fares, and destination options vary by county. Service
is available to all, but targeted to the older or handicapped riders.
Escort
Service
Escort Service may be arranged for an individual when their needs
cannot be met by the local transportation service.
Supportive Services
Supportive services staff are trained in assisting individuals and
families access community eldercare services and public programs
affecting older Nebraskans. Aging service information is catalogued for
ready reference to answer a
personal or telephone inquiry. If requested, staff will assist in
reviewing
options available and in making contact with the service needed. Staff
will
also make a private home visit to discuss options available. This
service
is available at each of the eight county service offices.
